The City Hall clock tells time once again! On January 15, 2019 the City Council approved using part of the Vote Your Main Street funds to return the clock to working condition. Balzer Family Clock Works removed the clock on March 28, 2019 and worked to remake broken parts and complete all the necessary repairs. In October 2019, the clock was reinstalled and returned to working order.
The videos below show the clock and dial removal processes, and the photo on the right shows what the clock looks like in the tower now. Check out the Balzers' website to see progress photos of the restoration process taken from their workshop.
The Partners in Preservation grant also included funding to repair the woodwork surrounding the clock. The remainder of the project will be completed by June 30, 2020.
No City funds have been used to complete this work. Thank you to those who supported this project during the online voting period!
Thanks to YOUR votes (nearly 85,000 of them!), Heart of Biddeford has received a $150,000 grant from American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to restore the City Hall clock tower! The funding will be used to bring the clock back to working order and repair the four faces of decorative work outside the clock room.
With your support, Biddeford was able to end the contest in 3rd place out of twenty communities nationwide. Whether you voted daily or just once, THANK YOU! You can learn more details about the results of the contest in our press release.
A special thank you to Heart of Biddeford for selecting our clock tower when applying for this grant and for the many hours spent rallying the community around this landmark.
